Assessing Neuropathy Risk and Quality of Life in Sedentary Obese, Prediabetic, and Type 2 Diabetic Populations: A Comprehensive Questionnaire-Based Approach

Abstract

Neuropathy is a common and debilitating complication associated with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, often exacerbated by obesity and physical inactivity. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of neuropathy and its impact on the quality of life (QoL) in a diverse cohort of obese, inactive, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes individuals.

Methods: We conducted a comprehensive analysis involving 600 participants from diverse backgrounds, comprising obese, physically inactive individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Neuropathy was assessed using clinical examinations, nerve conduction studies, and validated neuropathy assessment tools. Quality of life was evaluated using standardized QoL questionnaires, including the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the Neuropathy-Specific Quality of Life (NeuroQoL) questi onnaire.

Results: Our findings revealed a high prevalence of neuropathy among the study cohort, with neuropathic symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Obesity and physical inactivity were identified as significant risk factors for the development and progression of neuropathy. Furthermore, neuropathy had a substantial negative impact on the QoL of individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, as evidenced by lower scores on the SF-36 and NeuroQoL scales. Specifically, individuals with neuropathy reported decreased physical functioning, increased pain and discomfort, and reduced overall well-being.

Conclusion: This study highlights the critical need for early neuropathy detection and intervention in obese, inactive, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes individuals. Identifying neuropathy in its early stages can lead to more effective management strategies, potentially improving QoL and reducing the burden of this debilitating condition. Healthcare professionals should consider incorporating routine neuropathy assessments and QoL evaluations into the care of individuals at risk for or diagnosed with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, especially those who are obese and physically inactive. Further research is warranted to explore targeted interventions aimed at mitigating neuropathy-related impairments and enhancing the QoL in this vulnerable population.
